Sans famille - Heimatlos (as a film The Foundling ) is the title of a novel by Hector Malot from 1878, which has been used in various films. The story is an equivalent of Oliver Twist .

action

In Heimatlos the story of young Remi is told of stolen as an infant and his parents in Paris was suspended.

Remi, found in Paris by a stone carver named Barberin, is brought by him to his hometown near Ussel . Barberin returns to work in Paris, assuming that his wife will send the child to the foundling home.

However, his wife, named in the book as Mother Barberin , had lost a child of the same age herself immediately before, through which she developed a close maternal relationship with Remi.

Remi grew up assuming that Mother Barberin was his actual mother, and only found out at the age of eight, when Barberin returned to his hometown as a disabled person due to a serious work accident, that he was a foundling. Barberin, now unable to work, feels unable to finance a child.

Against the resistance of his wife, he decides to hand Remi over to the Findelheim. By chance, however, he got the opportunity to rent Remi to the street artist Vitalis , who wanders through France as an artist with three dogs and a monkey.

In this way, Remi gets to know the France of his time - the novel does not give an exact time of the action, but it is strongly adapted to the historical context of the year of publication, 1878, so that the novel can also be viewed as a naturalistic representation of the social conditions in France can.

In the following years Remi was shaped by several strokes of fate and trials - Vitalis, for whom he had developed a deep affection, died on a cold winter night, whereby Remi only barely survived that winter night himself.

Remi then finds accommodation with a family of gardeners who two years later are torn apart because the father of the family has to go to the debtor's house.

Together with Matthia, of the same age, whom Remi had met in Paris at a padron's house, Remi managed to earn a living as a musician, so that he even dared to pay his old foster mother a visit.

From her, Remi learns that his real family had called on her husband, who had since passed away, in search of their prodigal son.

Disturbed by this, Remi and Matthia go on a search for their part. On many detours, which in between even lead the two to England, Remi manages to solve the mystery of his origins and to find his mother and brother again.
