Santa Lucia del Mela is a city in the metropolitan city of Messina in the Sicily region in Italy with 4543 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Santa Lucia del Mela is 38 kilometers west of Messina . The residents mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto , Casalvecchio Siculo , Castroreale , Fiumedinisi , Furci Siculo , Gualtieri Sicaminò , Mandanici , Merì , Pace del Mela , Pagliara , San Filippo del Mela and San Pier Niceto .

history

The Casale Sancte Lucie is mentioned for the first time in 1188 as the property of the Bishop of Patti in a diploma from King Wilhelm II , in which the dispute settlement between Bishop Stephan and the royal chaplain Magister Benedict is notarized. After a temporary estrangement, it was returned to Bishop Philipp von Patti in 1249/1250.

S. Lucia di Mela was a court church in Staufer times , d. H. directed by a member of the court orchestra ( Capella Palatina ) in Palermo.

Attractions

The former castle is located on the highest point of the village, was in the meantime used as a seminary for the Roman Catholic diocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela and is now a monastery with a place of pilgrimage to Mary. The "Madonna della Neve" is venerated. The statue of the "Madonna of the Snow" was created by Antonello Gagini . The sanctuary with its monastery and adjoining church guest, conference and retreat house is looked after by Sacred Heart Priests from Mexico .

The main church Maria SS. Assunta is located in the central square of the place, it was built in the Norman period. Originally the cathedral of the Prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela , it has served as the co- cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela since 1986 . The cathedral was renovated between 1590 and 1642. The portal dates from the 16th century. The interior consists of three naves and is built in the Renaissance style.

The Episcopal Palace stands next to the cathedral. The palace now houses the diocesan museum, which shows sacred works of art from several centuries as well as secular exhibits from the region.
