Santa Maria della Scala ( Italian ) ( German: Holy Mary of the Stairs , Latin: Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae de scala ), is a Catholic church in the Roman district of Trastevere . It is a branch church of the parish of Santa Dorothea and title church of the titular deaconry of the same name . Since its construction, it has also been the monastery church of the eponymous convent of the Discalced Carmelites .

location

The church is located in the piazza of the same name, halfway down Via della Scala in Rome.

history

The church was built from 1593 to 1610; it took until 1624 to complete the facade. The reason for the construction was a miracle that was attributed to the icon of the "Madonna della Scala" (named after its place of storage on the staircase of a neighboring house). According to tradition, a midwife is said to have prayed in front of the picture when her daughter, who was born dumb, suddenly began to speak.

During the construction period, Pope Clement VIII handed the church over to the Order of the Discalced Carmelites with the Bull Sacrarum Religionum in 1597 , who until then had only been represented outside Spain in Italy with a monastery in Genoa in order to build a monastery next to the church. The Carmelite monastery and care of the church still exist today.

On January 14, 1684, Pope Alexander VII raised the church to the title of diaconate by transferring the previously existing title of Santa Maria Nuova here, Santa Maria Nuova later became the title church .
