Santa Tecla is a city in El Salvador . It is located about 6 km west of the capital San Salvador and is the capital of the La Libertad department . The namesake is Saint Thekla .

The fourth largest city in the country has about 191,600 inhabitants. Santa Tecla is often also referred to as Nueva San Salvador , as many people moved here from the expensive capital. The city is ruled by the left-wing FMLN party.

On January 8, 2001, as a result of a severe earthquake in the suburb of Colonia Las Colinas, a mountainside came loose and buried 400 houses. Around 500 deaths and 10,000 homeless people were the result. Many aid organizations , including German and Swiss ones , helped to repair the damage.
