Attractions

Parish Church of St. John Evangelist
Interior of the parish church of St. John
  • Parish Church of St. John Evangelist . The church was built from 1678 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen . It is a simple hall church made of plastered brick in gothic forms. The building, formerly only provided with a roof turret, received a new tower and two side extensions in 1913/14. The baroque furnishings include two side altars from the 2nd half of the 17th century. On June 22nd, 2008 the new organ in the parish church St. Johannes Ev. Solemnly consecrated (built by Hermann Eule Orgelbau, Bautzen).
  • House Schücking, Von-Galen-Straße 4. The small single-storey brick building with a hipped roof was built in 1754 for the episcopal chancellor Engelbert Schücking. The plans were drawn up by the important Westphalian baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun . The house was changed in 1882.
  • Princely mill (meeting place). The originally single-storey quarry stone building from 1578 was increased by two additional storeys in 1865 and 1948.
  • The former Landesburg Sassenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1305. The main castle had been demolished since the end of the 18th century. Only small remnants of the outer bailey, which was rebuilt by Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg from 1698 on , were incorporated into a spinning mill building (today the Gebrasa company) in the 19th century. They are still visible there today.
  • Lappenbrink 4. The stately half-timbered house not far from the church was built towards the end of the 17th century. House Lappenbrink 4 , which is currently vacant, is likely to date from the same time .
  • Altes Zollhaus, Schürenstrasse 6. The gable-independent half-timbered building was built in 1734 as a town house. In the 19th century, the former hall house was converted into a hallway and later expanded with extensions. The interior still contains a baroque stucco ceiling , which is also known as the Cologne ceiling . The house is currently being restored by the "Stadtprojekt Sassenberg" association and will later be used for exhibition purposes.

traffic

Sassenberg is the junction of federal highways 475 , 476 and 513 . The B 475 has been developed as a bypass road in the area of the city center and the district of Füchtorf. This route enables a very fast connection to the district town of Warendorf and the Osnabrück area .

Plans to run the B 476 as a bypass road north of the Feldmark recreation area in order to reduce through traffic were initially discarded.

The connection of Sassenberg to the local public transport is limited to a (on working days) clocked line to the district town of Warendorf (bus service of Westfalenbus GmbH); Individual trips to Glandorf , Versmold and Harsewinkel run across the district boundary . The regional centers of Bielefeld and Osnabrück can therefore only be reached by detours: to Osnabrück via Warendorf and Münster, to Bielefeld via Warendorf with the RB 67 ( Warendorfer Bahn ).

Sassenberg is connected to numerous long-distance bicycle routes, u. a. to the 100-Schlösser-Route , the historic city centers cycle path and the Teuto-Ems cross-border route .
