history

The ancient city of Sentinum was near Sassoferrato . Here the Romans defeated the Samnites and Senones in the third Samnite War in 295 BC . The city was destroyed in 41 BC by a general of Augustus in the course of the civil war. However, it was soon rebuilt.

After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up around 50 internment camps ( campo di concentramento ) throughout Italy . A warehouse was established in Sassoferrato in 1942. It was located in a former convent, Santa Croce , not far from the village center. The internees were exclusively members of the Slavic minorities in the Italian border provinces and Yugoslavs from the areas occupied and annexed by Italy. After the fall of fascism, there were 37 Slovenian and Croatian inmates from the provinces of Gorizia , Fiume and Zara in the camp. Under the RSI , the warehouse was temporarily reused.
