KK Satelight ( Japanese 株式会社 サ テ ラ イ ト , Kabushiki-gaisha Sateraito ) is an animation studio founded in December 1995, which, together with the Studio Group TAC, produced the first fully digital anime - TV series Bit the Cupid in April 1996. Even today, the studio is known for its intensive use of computer graphics , into which drawn characters and their animations are integrated.

history

Satelight was founded in December 1995 in Sapporo , Hokkaidō , Japan as a subsidiary of the computer electronics company KKBUG. The name won through from the letter S for S apporo, A for a nimate (dt. "Animate"), T for T (dt. "Technology") echnology and E for E (dt. "Entertainment") ntertainment together.

The studio was supposed to develop digital animation series, the first product of which was the 48-part series Bit the Cupid ( ビ ッ ト ・ ザ ・ キ ュ ー ピ ッ ド ) in 1996 . According to Satelight, this was the world's first television series that consisted only of CG animations.

In 1996 it was also responsible for the computer animation for the anime film Ihatov Genso: Kenji no Haru produced by the Studio Group TAC . Since then, the two studios have been working together more often on other works. Shōji Kawamori who directed it became the company director of Satelight.

Soon after, in 1998, the company set up its own production studio in Suginami , Tokyo, and began creating its own television series. With him as director, other successful productions such as Sōsei no Aquarion or Macross Frontier followed in the following years .

In 2006, the studio moved its headquarters from Sapporo to Asagaya , Suginami , Tokyo.
