Satu Maijastiina Hassi (born June 3, 1951 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician of the Green Confederation and has been a member of the Finnish Parliament since 2015, to which she was a member from 1991 to 2004. From 2004 to 2014 she was a member of the European Parliament .

biography

Satu Hassi studied electrical engineering at the Helsinki University of Technology . In 1975 she moved to Tampere and received at the city's Technical University in 1979 her Master Accounts and 1985 the licentiate . From 1979 to 1981 she worked as an engineer at the machine company Oy Tampella Ab. After that she was a lecturer at Tampere University until 1985 . From 1985 she worked as a freelance writer.

In 1984 she ran successfully for the Tampere City Council. Until 2000 she worked in local politics. In 1990 she was one of the authors of the first green party program with Pekka Sauri and Pauli Välimäki. In 1991 she moved to the Finnish Parliament as a member. From 1997 to 2001 she was the leader of the Green Party. In addition, she took over the chairmanship there several times.

On April 15, 1999, Satu Hassi became Minister for Environment and Development Aid under Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen . However, she resigned on May 31, 2002 to protest the cabinet decision to build a fifth nuclear reactor in Finland. In 2004 her membership in the Finnish Parliament ended after being elected to the European Parliament. Hassi did not run for office in 2014, but returned to the Finnish Reichstag in 2015. There she took over the chairmanship of the Environment Committee.

Since 2003 Satu Hassi has also been a board member of the Worldwatch Institute . She has published several books, novels and poems, and a series of textbooks for teaching physics in high schools. She is married and has two grown daughters.

Activities as an EU parliamentarian

From 2009 to 2014, Hassi was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety , the Delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Delegation for Relations with India. She was a deputy in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and in the delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China .
