Location and economy

Location and connections

The place is east of the city of Groningen , between Menterwolde and Reiderland . It is cut through by the Leer – Groningen railway line and the A7 motorway (both: Groningen- Winschoten - Leer (East Friesland) ). The village of Scheemda has a small station on the railway line. The Winschoterdiep canal enables inland shipping to call at the small port of Scheemda. Other canals cross the former community, but these are only accessible for canoes, small yachts, etc. For the sake of water sports tourists, numerous small campsites have been created in recent decades.

economy

The industry in the former municipality (suitable because of the location and favorable connections) was important in the past (cardboard, church bells, shipbuilding). Today there are only small businesses. Attempts are made to attract new companies through promotions. The main sources of income for the Scheemda economy are currently agriculture and tourism. There are also now facilities for commuters from elsewhere (see below).

Blue city

In 2005, construction of the so-called Blue City (Dutch: De Blauwe Stad ) began. Here villas are built around an artificial lake. This is trying to make the area inviting for rich people from other parts of the Netherlands. On May 12, 2005, Queen Beatrix opened the water supply. In spring 2007 , the first houses around the artificial lake were completed and the residents moved in. The project also has some opponents. In particular, the local Communist Party (VCP, United Communist Party) made many attempts to block the project.

History and museums

Between around 1240 and the devastating fire in 1624 there was a monastery of the Premonstratensian order near Heiligerlee . All the villages of the former parish suffered from the Dollard floods in the late Middle Ages ; many places had to be rebuilt around 1500 south of the original location. In 1536 the first battle took place at Heiligerlee; in the process, the troops of Emperor Charles V defeated the Duchy of Geldern . The Second Battle of Heiligerlee was of greater importance . On May 23, 1568 , troops of the rebellious Dutch attacked the Spanish successfully. That was the beginning of the Eighty Years War . A memorial to Count Adolf, who died in battle, and a small museum in the village of Heiligerlee keep the memory of this important battle alive. In the 17th century Nieuwolda was nicknamed golden hamrik . Golden , because of the wealth of the great peasants; hamrik (East Frisian: Hammrich) should mean : low-lying, sometimes flooded meadow . In this municipality, as in the rest of the province of Groningen, the difference between the rich peasants and the poor workers was great, creating a deep social divide. Several rich farmhouses have been preserved. In one of them in Nieuwolda there is a collection of strollers that can be viewed. The local history museum is housed in another such courtyard (see the municipality's website). In the period from 1850 to 1980 there were several important industrial companies, namely the straw cardboard factory in Scheemda and the bell foundry in Heiligerlee. The latter was partially preserved as a museum.
