The slide thrust rod is a part of the outer link control a steam engine, the best known of their classification as Heusinger control has been executed.

Application and purpose

The slide pushrod is the crucial component of the Heusinger control. It transmits the movements of the rocker to the slide rod and is at the same time the fulcrum for the advance lever and thus ensures the transmission of the movement from the cross head to the slide rod. The photos show that it is the most cranked rod of the control system in the cylinder area. This is due to the position on the slide rod and the movement through the throwing lever and thus the control. In the area of the rocker arm, the slide pushrod is usually mounted on the inside and has the characteristic fork. There are two options for adjusting the slide pushrod; on the one hand via the throw lever and on the other hand via the Kuhn loop. These two possibilities can be seen very clearly in the workshop picture of the Meiningen steam locomotive works .

On the sketch you can see that the slide pushrod is designed for filling. It serves as a fulcrum for transmitting the movement of the cross head via the advance lever and for transmitting the movement of the rocker. Since the rocker runs 90 ° ahead, the control rod remains in the end positions, and thus when the cylinder is filled with steam, and is only withdrawn from the end position after the crosshead has moved backwards. If the slide push rod is in a horizontal position, only the movement of the cross head is transmitted to the advance lever and thus the slide rod. The steam locomotive is therefore idling.
