The SER ship Rostock GmbH is a company based in Rostock , the electrotechnical and electronic equipment for shipbuilding supplier and industry. It emerged from VEB Schiffselektronik Rostock (SER), which was a general supplier for shipbuilding in the GDR .

history

Until 1948 there were technical offices of Siemens & Halske , Siemens-Schuckert and the AEG in Rostock , which were transferred in 1949 to the state- owned companies Starkstromanlagenbau Rostock (VEM) and Fernmeldeanlagenbau Rostock (RFT). Both companies were mainly active in the energy supply and communications technology in the country. With the upswing in GDR shipbuilding, the need for electrical energy, control and communications technology in the shipyards also increased. In both companies, therefore, ship equipment areas were formed, which were finally merged on December 30, 1969 to form VEB Schiffselektronik Rostock with around 3000 employees.

The SER became the general supplier for the electronic and electrotechnical equipment of the GDR shipbuilding. Branches were set up at all of the larger shipyards in the Rostock district, which were responsible for assembly and maintenance work on site. Further service departments were located in the seaports of Rostock and Wismar and in the ports of the fish combine in Rostock and Sassnitz . From 1979 the SER belonged to the VEB Kombinat Schiffbau .

On average, VEB SER equips around 65 new ships per year. In addition to the switchgear and control systems, which were mainly produced at the headquarters in Rostock-Schutow, mainly Soviet communications and navigation technology were installed at the shipyards, which were heavily oriented towards export to the USSR . In the 1980s, the company reached its peak with the complete equipment of the technically demanding fishing and cargo ship series. In 1986 the company was named after the former SED politician Johannes Warnke .

After the turn of the VEB SER was in June 1990 just before the monetary union transformed into a corporation and by the Treuhandanstalt founded AG German mechanical engineering and shipbuilding incorporated.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the East German shipyards and their suppliers lost their main sales market. The Schiffselektronik Rostock GmbH , which called itself SER Systemelektronik Rostock from 1993 to 1996 and has been called SER Schiffselektronik Rostock since then , had to carry out radical restructuring, which included a considerable reduction in staff.

Since the end of the 1990s, the number of employees has been around 40. In production, the company specialized in bridge equipment and switchgear, but also continued to offer the assembly of complete marine equipment. In addition, service and maintenance work was carried out for the ships that were equipped during the GDR era and afterwards.
