Schklou ( Belarusian Шклоў , Russian Шклов Schklow ), earlier spelling also Szklów, is a city in Belarus in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz and the administrative center of the administrative unit Rajon Schklou .
history
The place is first mentioned in writing in 1535. During the Russo-Polish War , two battles took place in the area in 1654 and 1656.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Shklow was an important Jewish center with a yeshiva . At the end of the 19th century, over 5,000 Jews lived here. Migration began at the beginning of the 20th century. In July 1941 the place was occupied by German troops. According to Soviet sources, 3200 Jews in Schklow and the surrounding area were shot by the Einsatzgruppen in September 1941 .
