Battle of Alling

Ludwig VII was defeated in the battle of Alling.

The Battle of Alling in what is now the Fürstenfeldbruck district was the decisive battle of the Bavarian War . The dukes of Bavaria-Munich , Ernst and Wilhelm III. , beat their cousin Ludwig VII of Bavaria-Ingolstadt on September 19, 1422 .

The battle is known for the spectacular fall of Ernst's son Albrecht III . Albrecht's horse is said to have collapsed injured in the midst of the enemy troops, whereupon Ernst fought his way to his son and saved him. The battle itself was more like a skirmish , the Ingolstadt were forced to retreat after a brief exchange of blows. Many of them fled north, where the heavily armored men are said to have got stuck in the moor . The Munich dukes are said to have taken more than 400 prisoners, which they soon released.

Today the Votive Church in Hoflach , donated by Duke Ernst, still commemorates the battle. The building of the chapel is said to go back to a vow that Duke Ernst made here to save his son Albrecht from the battle. A fresco in the chapel depicts the victorious Munich residents with their troops.

In a more recent study on the Battle of Alling, Lothar Altmann doubts both whether Albrecht was saved by his father and the large number of people from Ingolstadt who were captured. Bernhard Glasauer regards Altmann's doubts as justified and considers an exact reconstruction of the course of the battle to be difficult due to the unfavorable sources .
