Battle of Musgrove Mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Musgrove Mill took place on August 18, 1780 and was one of the early turning points in the southern theater of the American Revolutionary War . It is one of the prime examples of the guerrilla warfare and civil war that raged around Musgrove Mill, a mill on the Enoree River in what is now Clinton , South Carolina . In the battle, around 300 patriotic militia men defeated a unit of 300 loyalist militia and 300 British soldiers from nearby Fort Ninety Six.

The patriotic troops led by Colonel Isaac Shelby , Colonel James Williams and Colonel Elijah Clark lost 4 men and 8 others were wounded. Of the British and royal troops marching under Colonel Alexander Innes, Captain Abraham DePeyster and Colonel Daniel Clary, 160 were wounded or captured, and 63 men were killed in the battle.

The battlefield is under the name of Musgrove's Mill Historic Battle Site in National Register of Historic Places listed.
