Silesian Museum in Görlitz

The Silesian Museum zu Görlitz was opened on May 13, 2006 in an architecturally newly composed complex (design by Rolf Zimmermann ) that brings together four historical buildings: the Schönhof , the Mittelhaus, the building on the Fischmarkt , both of which date from 1832 , as well as the Hallenhaus at Untermarkt 4.

So that everything can functionally take place “under one roof”, the northern inner courtyard between Schönhof and Mittelhaus was given a glass roof, while the smaller courtyard to the south connects the Mittelhaus and the fish market with a glass transition. The whole museum complex is handicapped accessible.

With the roofing of the north courtyard , the original sgraffito facade of the courtyard front from 1526 , which was partially preserved at Schönhof, received special protection.

concept

The middle house used to be a brewery and the building on the fish market housed the taprooms . This house was expanded into a venue for the Silesian Museum with a multimedia presentation on the history of Silesia .

Due to the special design of the entire ensemble and the particularly valuable ceiling, wall and beam paintings from the Renaissance period , an exhibition concept has been developed for the adapted exterior. Apart from the fire extinguisher , nothing is allowed to hang on the walls. The showcases for the exhibits also provide the appropriate light.

The collection gives an insight into 1000 years of Silesian cultural history. A part is dedicated to landscapes such as the Giant Mountains and cities such as B. Wroclaw . Another part shows craftsmanship, history as well as the people and their living and working conditions. The exhibition of paintings and sculptures, which was previously shown in the exhibition room on Untermarkt , which opened in 2001 , also moved to the new museum complex. The old rooms will then house the archive .

Markus Bauer is the director of the Silesian Museum.

Foundation and history

The house is supported by the Silesian Museum Foundation in Görlitz, in which the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Saxony , the City of Görlitz and the Silesian Landsmannschaft are involved. A "State Museum of Silesia" was planned in the Landsmannschaft even before the fall of the Wall . It was to be built in Lower Saxony, the sponsor country of the Silesians; the Sülte in Hildesheim was planned . After 1990 the plans were changed and the location in the Silesian city of Görlitz was chosen. Essential preparatory work for both projects was carried out by the support association Landesmuseum Schlesien eV, whose chairman was the Lower Saxony state parliament member Walter E. Lellek .
