A diaphragm wall grab is a clamshell grab for deep digging of diaphragm walls . The grab is guided by a crawler crane or rope excavator . Mechanical or hydraulic diaphragm wall grabs are preferably used.

The mechanical diaphragm wall grab scoops the earth to be conveyed using its own weight and the pulling ropes into the two closing buckets. The hydraulic diaphragm wall grab presses the two buckets together by means of hydraulic pressure cylinders.

The mouth widths are generally available in sizes from 2300 mm to 4200 mm and widths from 400 mm to 1500 mm.
