Herborn Castle was built at the end of the 12th century as a tower hill castle with a neck moat and was connected to the city wall of Herborn. In 1251 it was renewed and rebuilt like a castle at the beginning of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1307/1312. The castle was the center of the Herborn Mark , which the Counts of Nassau held as a fiefdom of the Landgraves of Hesse .

After that, the castle only occasionally served as a secondary residence or widow's seat. Between 1739 and 1757 Isabelle Charlotte von Nassau-Dietz had her widow's residence in the castle. She was buried in the Evangelical City Church of Herborn .

From 1806 it was unused and quickly deteriorated. 1929–1931 it was restored by the architect Ludwig Hofmann .

Todays use

Today the Herborn Castle is the seat of the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau , a direct successor institution of the Herborn High School.

The castle houses an important library with around 68,000 titles. Around 10,000 of these date from before 1900, including many from Herborn's historical printing works (e.g. Corvin).
