The Schlossguggerhaus is the oldest surviving structure in the Austrian city of Dornbirn , a building from the High Middle Ages. It is built in a post- and- beam construction and with the dendrochronologically secured construction date around the year 1294, it is one of the oldest structures of this type in Austria. It is considered an outstanding example of anonymous rural construction.

history

Erected in the 13th century in the immediate vicinity of the Oberdorfer Tower, which is now only preserved in the remains of the wall, the Schlossguggerhaus is located at Sebastianstraße 24 in the Oberdorf district of Dornbirn . The building is built here towards the Zanzenberg and is located directly at the confluence of Sebastianstrasse and Bergstrasse . The area around the Oberdorf parish church of St. Sebastian and several other medieval buildings once formed the location of the Oberdorf tower. In 1970 the foundation walls of the Oberdorfer Tower, which should be directly related to the Schlossguggerhaus, were excavated. In 2010, dendrochronological investigations were carried out on the still well-preserved Schlossguggerhaus, according to which the original estimate of the construction time in the 15th century had to be re-dated to the 13th century. The entire building has been a listed building since 1967 ( list entry ).

Legends from Dornbirn tell of the fact that the name Schlossguggerhaus comes from the fact that the house could once have served as the castle overseer's residence. Another legend tells that once an underground corridor led from the Schlossguggerhaus to the Oberdorfer Tower, in which the wealthy Luger, Diem and Huber families are said to have hidden their jewelry during the French wars. According to legend, it was found and occupied by the French.

architecture

At its core, the Schlossguggerhaus consists of a late Romanesque plank frame construction with horizontal beams. If the building was originally made entirely of wood, the house gradually became a “wood-stone-mixed construction” due to the changing working methods.
