The butterfly nest is a historic excursion restaurant in the Köpenick district of Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick district . The garden restaurant, which opened in 1898, was heavily bombed in 1943 and rebuilt in 1947, has been owned by the Bezirkssportbund Treptow-Köpenick e.V. since the end of the 1990s. V. operated as a non-profit school, sports and hiking base.

For day trippers, the facility offers a snack bar with chairs, tables and play equipment in the garden (as of 2012). A butterfly collection is presented in a permanent exhibition in an adjoining hall . The name of the house goes back to the collection. According to the operator, it is the second largest exhibition of its kind in Europe and the largest in Germany. The butterfly nest is located in the Teufelssee area of the Köpenick Forestry Office of the Berlin Forests on the north bank of the Long Lake , east of the Wendenschloss seaside resort . The Grünau lido is located on the opposite south bank of the lake through which the Dahme flows .

history

The name of the butterfly nest was given by its founder, master glass engraver and butterfly researcher Johannes Bittner. In an adjoining exhibition room, Bittner presented his butterfly collection, which was supposedly world-famous at the time. The collection was destroyed along with the house in 1943.

Bittner, who comes from Bohemia, opened his butterfly showroom with a snack bar and bar in 1898 and initially operated it under the name of Restaurant Johann Bittner . In 1904 a steamboat landing stage was set up at the house. The Richard (today under the name Eintracht sailing museum ship of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Schiffahrtsgesellschaft e.V. in the historic port of Berlin ), a nearly 17-meter-long motor ship of the Löcknitz type of the Rummelsburg anchor shipyard, operated by Richard Eckner in Grünau mainly in the Translation traffic from Grünau to the butterfly nest and Marienlust. Marienlust was another excursion restaurant, which was about 800 meters east of the butterfly nest, also on the Long Lake, which burned down in 1997 and was completely removed. The landing stage encouraged excursion traffic to such an extent that Bittner significantly expanded the butterfly nest in 1906, including adding a large parquet hall.

For a time, the butterfly nest served the lepidopterists' association Orion zu Berlin , which was founded on August 1, 1890 (later renamed the Entomological Society Orion zu Berlin ) as a club restaurant on excursions. On Christmas Eve 1943, the buildings were badly damaged by a bomb attack . A tenant ran the restaurant, which was rebuilt in 1947, until the early 1990s. Shortly after the fall of the Wall , the lessee gave up the business because of the high lease costs . Subsequently, the area lay fallow and overgrown until 1999 . In 1999 the district sports association Treptow-Köpenick e. V., supported by a local hardware store and other donors, with reconstruction measures that have largely been completed since 2012. As the new tenant, the District Sports Association decided not to reopen the butterfly nest as a restaurant after consultation with the District Office and set up a non-profit school, sports and hiking base with a snack for excursion guests.

Butterfly collection and exhibitions

After the destruction of the Bittner collection in 1943, a new butterfly collection has been on display since 2007. The core of this collection is the Jacobs collection, which Herbert Jacobs - in the 1970s second chairman of the Orion Entomological Society in Berlin   - had created from 1902 to 1952. With a donation of ten showcases from the Natural History Museum , among other things , 73 showcases with 3540 exotic and native butterflies and insects are available to the public in a permanent exhibition in the old room next to the former inn. According to the base, it is the second largest exhibition of its kind in Europe and the largest in Germany. School classes in particular use the guided tours through the scientifically supervised collection.

During the Long Night of Science in 2011, the butterfly nest was one of the starting points. In addition to the presentation of the collections, experiments were carried out on the subject of light sources as a death trap for insects and for insect feeding. During the insect feeding, entomologists from Orion and NABU presented “recipes” for bait and used the bait to attract butterflies and other insects. The experts showed how the presence of a species in a certain region can be proven with the targeted use of the bait .

In addition, changing and free art installations, fashion shows and exhibitions take place in the butterfly nest, for example by local painters and photographers or on the history of the district.
