The Schneeweiderhof district is located about three kilometers from Eßweiler at an altitude of about 500 meters on the Bornberg .

history

The history of the place is closely linked to the quarries that were established there from the 1870s. Between 1922 and 1924, the then owner of the quarries, Basalt AG, Linz am Rhein , built a workers' settlement for the quarry workers, the colony , from basalt stones according to plans by the architects Mattar & Scheler . The system is still largely original.

Because of the high number of pupils (in 1952 a total of 25 pupils in seven classes), a school was set up in a specially constructed building on the Schneeweiderhof in 1952. This saved the children the daily walk to Eßweiler and back again. The school was closed in 1965 after a school reform. Since the quarries were closed in 1970, the number of inhabitants on the Schneeweiderhof has been falling continuously, and more and more apartments in the colony are empty. However, the Schneeweiderhof is popular with hikers and day-trippers in the vicinity, who use the local restaurant for refreshments. The district waste dump of the Kusel district has been located on the quarry site since 1988.
