The Shostakovich Music School Berlin-Lichtenberg has existed since 1954 and is financed and administered by the Berlin district of Lichtenberg . It has three locations and is one of the most successful music schools in all of Berlin. The institution is named after Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Schostakowitsch . At the moment (as of spring 2013) Olaf Hengst is the head of the music school.

Location and history

The administration and main teaching location of the music school is in the Berlin-Fennpfuhl district (Paul-Junius-Straße 71), the two branches are in Neu-Hohenschönhausen (Wustrower Straße 26) and Karlshorst (Stolzenfelsstraße 1).

The history of the Lichtenberg Music School begins when it was founded in 1954. In 1988 the Hohenschönhausen Music School was opened in the district of the same name .

The district merger led to a merger of the two schools in 2002. The new facility was officially named Shostakovich Music School Berlin-Lichtenberg in 2005 .

Used buildings

She moved into a historic building that had been built in 1907 in the then Lichtenberg community on Woerdenstrasse as a boys 'and girls' grammar school. After the Second World War, the house housed various educational institutions, including the Franz-Mehring-Oberschule in the north-western half until 1962 . (This merged with the Kant-Oberschule in 1963 and was then based on Nöldnerplatz .) The other half was and is still used by the Lichtenberg Adult Education Center. During the renovation work between 2005 and 2012, handicapped-accessible entrances were added, the roof was newly covered, the facades were renewed and the historic tower clock was repaired. The clock on the roof had stood still since 1984. During the restoration of the house, which was as true to the original as possible, the clock was given new gold-plated hands and hour markers and, above all, master watchmaker Ingo Zimmer was able to restart the clockwork. The dial has a diameter of three meters and can therefore be seen from afar. In addition to the work inside the house, the roof of the gym on the park side was renewed. The entire renovation cost 800,000 euros, which was largely financed from the economic stimulus package I of the Senate Department for Urban Development .

Karlshorst Theater , in which the Shostakovich Music School also uses rooms

The Karlshorst branch uses some rooms in today's Karlshorst theater . The multi-winged, listed building was the house of the Red Army officers until 1994 .

The Neu-Hohenschönhausen branch is housed in a three-storey new school complex that is used by both the Vincent van Gogh School and the Schule am Wäldchen . The branches are very helpful for the large number of students and a good proximity to home.

Student achievements

Students from the music school have already successfully taken part in the Jugend musiziert competition several times : For example, 20 students took part in individual and group competitions in the Berlin regional competition of Jugend musiziert 2007 and won eight first prizes, four second prizes and one third prize.

Training content

In addition to traditional school subjects, the school also offers relatively unknown subjects. The target group consists of children and young people, but adults are also trained. The educators teach singing, sheet music, music education and teach participants how to master various musical instruments. There is also the opportunity to play in orchestras, bands, choirs and ensembles and develop there.

Since many Vietnamese live in Lichtenberg, the school offers traditional Vietnamese music as a course that is unique in Germany .
