Black beard pirate is wreaking havoc on all the world's oceans. He tries cunningly to go on forays with his crew. Most of the time he is not smart enough and clever guys like the old sailor Nick and his harpooner Sebastian cleverly thwart his plans.

The first episodes were still dedicated to old Nick as the title hero and appeared in Spirou from 1958 . 1960 began an album release with Dupuis . With the fourth story Pirate Schwarzbart was added, who then became the main character. 26 albums had been created by 1985.

In Germany, the stories appeared from 1966 in the Kauka magazines Lupo modern , Tip Top and FF Super , then in 1976 and 1977 in Fix and Foxi . 1980/1981 22 issues were published by Bastei-Verlag , from 1987 to 1992 nine albums by Reiner Feest Verlag . From 1989 to 1991 episodes were reprinted in Fix and Foxi.
