Bad on the Brauhausberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bad am Brauhausberg , formerly the swimming pool on the Brauhausberg, was the most popular swimming pool in Potsdam . It was located in the southern area of the city center, at the foot of the Brauhausberg and near the main train station . The swimming pool was used by the sports clubs SC Potsdam, OSC Potsdam Luftschiffhafen, ESV Lokomotive Potsdam and the diving club Filmstadt Babelsberg in 1961. The bath at Brauhausberg was replaced in 2017 by the Blu sports and leisure bath built right next door .

history

In the late 1960s, the number of visitors to the Werner-Alfred-Bad , the only indoor swimming pool in Potsdam at the time , continued to increase. This made it necessary to build another swimming pool. In 1969, the construction of the swimming pool on the Brauhausberg finally began as part of the "Sports Buildings" project of the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport Leipzig. At the same time, similar swimming pools were built in Rostock , Leipzig and Dresden , and a little later in Erfurt and Halle (Saale) . In contrast to the swimming pools in these cities, the swimming pool on the Brauhausberg should be handed over to the population for broad use and not only be available for competitive sports.

After some financial and structural difficulties, the swimming pool was inaugurated on Republic Day on October 7, 1971. It immediately enjoyed great popularity and was the venue for district, district and GDR championships, triathlon, Sanssouci and pioneer cups, children's and youth spartakiads, district testing competitions, all-around championships and sports festivals.

The swimming pool was the scene of some sporting highlights. In 1978 the Lithuanian swimmer Lina Kačiušytė set a new world record over 200 m chest there . In 1988 the swimming pool was the venue for the 39th GDR championships with several world and GDR records, and in 1993 the venue for the 105th German swimming championships .

The former swimming pool, 2007

At the beginning of the nineties, the first renovation and modernization work was carried out on the building, especially on the suspended roof and in the sanitary and changing areas. In 2005 the bath became the property of the Potsdam bathing landscape . From February 3 to May 15, 2006, the swimming pool had to be temporarily closed so that safety-related defects in the supporting structure could be eliminated.

The municipal utilities , which had operated the swimming pool hall up to then, decided at the beginning of February 2008, in view of the desolate condition of the hall, especially the roof - as a result of the decision of the Potsdam City Council on January 16, 2008 - to completely renovate the facility. Just under seven million euros were charged for the repair of the hall. After a six-month closure, the hall was reopened for recreational and sport swimmers on February 14, 2009. In addition, a new filter system was installed to improve the water quality and the hall was repainted.

In 2010 it was determined that the bathroom was in dire need of renovation. It was also planned to demolish the hall and integrate it with 50-meter lanes in a new water park, which was designed by the Brazilian star architect Oscar Niemeyer . Due to the lack of funding and the enormous costs, the plans were initially discarded and later partially implemented - in the swimming pool, then called Blu .

Sports and leisure pool Blu

After discussions about other possible locations, the Potsdam city council followed a public survey in 2012, the result of which was the desire for a more cost-effective new building on Brauhausberg. Like the neighboring Potsdam Central Station , the pool was designed by Hamburg architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners . However, the originally planned costs of 23 million euros could not be met and have risen to 40 million euros. The new sports and leisure pool was opened on June 7, 2017 under the name Blu and is divided into sections for sports , leisure , sauna and wellness .

Immediately before the opening of the new pool, the historic swimming pool was finally closed on May 21, 2017. Its demolition began in June 2018.
