history

The wrestling club was founded on October 5th, 1902 by 33 men in the Krone restaurant in Töss . In 1906 the club already had 34 active and 89 passive members. In February 1908, access tests were introduced at a board meeting, so a candidate for active membership had to attend 3 hours of practice and be able to lift a hundredweight five times. This was introduced because many members came forward who are too weak to swing. From August 1915 to March 1919, members of the Board of Management were banned from resigning due to the First World War . Fritz Hagmann was successful in the 1920s , he became Olympic champion in freestyle middleweight wrestling in 1924 and won the first edition of the Kilchberger Schwinget in 1927 . A victory at a Federal Wrestling and Alpine Festival was denied to him until the very end, in 1926 he failed with a staged final course at the festival victory.

In 1953 the club was allowed to hold the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival for the 50th anniversary of the wrestling association. At this wrestling festival in Winterthur, Walter Flach , the winner of last year's Kilchberger Schwinget, became a Winterthur wrestling king for the first time . In 1961, Karl Meli became the second Winterthur wrestling king , he was able to repeat this success three years later in 1964, in 1966 Meli failed in the final course to Ruedi Hunsperger . In 1965, the number of members of the club exceeded the 500 mark. In 1967 and 73 Meli won the Kilchberger Schwinget. In 1976 the number of members reached its peak with over 1,000 members. In 1977 Arnold Ehrensberger became the third and, for the time being, last from the ranks of the Winterthur Schwingkönig at the Swiss Federal.

Currently the most successful wrestler at the Schwingklub Winterthur is Samir Leuppi , who was the only Winterthur to win a wreath at the Swiss Wrestling Festival 2019 in Zug.

Eschenberg swinging

The club regularly holds a wrestling festival in the clearing in the Eschenberg forest . The first event of this kind in the form of a club swing took place in the clearing on August 30, 1903. Between 1914 and 1927, the Sporrer in Wülflingen was usually the venue for the annual swinget. From 1932, with the exception of 1945, the Schwinget took place on the Eschenberg without interruption.
