Ellen Browning Scripps was 89 years old when it was founded. According to Ellen Browning Scripps, "the primary duty of a college is to provide its students with an education that enables them to think clearly and independently and to lead lives of trust, courage and hope." College was designed to provide women in the western United States with an opportunity to prepare for professional life and an opportunity for personal development. Scripps placed particular emphasis on creating an artistic connection between the college buildings and the surrounding parkland on campus.

campus

In its 2015 edition of The 379 Best Colleges , The Princeton Review named the campus the fifth most beautiful campus in the United States; an assessment shared by Forbes magazine . The US News & World Report and The Huffington Post came to the same conclusion .

Scripps College is located in the middle of Claremont Colleges and is surrounded by Harvey Mudd College to the north, Pitzer College to the east, Claremont McKenna College and Pomona College to the south, and Claremont Graduate University to the west. The original layout of the college was designed by Gordon Kaufmann and is based on the so-called "Spanish Colonial Revival Style". Kaufmann's original plans from 1926 are still largely followed today. The gardens were planned by Edward Huntsman-Trout and are still largely planted according to these plans. The campus also has a number of open gardens, including a rose garden in the north where residents of the village are allowed to cut flowers, and fruit trees whose fruits can be harvested by anyone. Orange , grapefruit , pomegranate and kumquat trees have been planted . Olives are also harvested on the premises of Scripps College and made into an olive oil that the college has already won awards for.
