The Scuola Grande dei Carmini was one of the six great schools in Venice . Your building is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere between Campo dei Carmini and Campo di Santa Margherita near the church of Santa Maria dei Carmini .
history
The school was founded in 1594. However, it was not recognized as a “Great School” until 1767 by the Council of Ten . In 1807 the school was closed under the Napoleonic regime, but reopened in 1853. The brotherhood is still active today.

The building consists of two construction phases. A first, L-shaped and fully functional section including part of the main facade was built by Francesco Caustello from 1627. After purchasing the corner plot between the foothills of the square and the Church of Carmini, a new architectural competition was announced in 1668, which Baldassare Longhena won. The two-story facade extends next to the monastery church. The furnishings, including the ceiling painting by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770), were created in the 18th century. The flat-roofed hall on the ground floor contains monochrome murals that Niccolò Bambini (1651–1736) created. The narrow staircase is decorated with stucco by Abbondio Stazio (1663–1745) and paintings by Sante Piatti (1687–1747). The high-contrast ceiling painting in the large hall on the upper floor (handover of the scapular to the blessed Simon Stock ) is by Tiepolo. Also worth mentioning is a painting by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta , which depicts Judith and Holofernes .
