history
Sea of Love (First Organizer)
The first event in the series in 2002, which was then organized by Endless Event, was attended by over 2,500 spectators. Sven Väth played as the headliner . If it was still a one-day event, after the 2004 festival, organizer Bela Gurath had the idea of extending it to a multi-day event. The headliners in 2005 were the artists Monika Kruse and DJ Rush . The latter was one of the headliners the following year, when the festival was still one day (together with Felix da Housecat , Tiefschwarz and Turntablerocker ).
In 2007 there was a floating stage and another in a covered tent. The headliners were The Disco Boys , Moguai and Moonbootica . However, the event was still limited to Sunday. This was also the case in 2008, when the headliners Felix da Housecat and Lexy (from Lexy & K-Paul ) had to cancel due to illness. Further headliners back then were Monika Kruse and Tiefschwarz. In 2009, some of the previous headliners already played with over 6,000 viewers. In 2010 the festival ran for two days for the first time. On Saturday 2raumwohnung , Paul Kalkbrenner , Chris Liebing and Die Fantastischen Vier played , while on Sunday 2Many DJs , Tiga , Karotte , Lexy & K-Paul, Marco Petralia and others could be seen. The number of visitors rose to 15,000 in 2010.
For the tenth event in 2011, Moby , Tiësto , Paul Kalkbrenner , Robyn and DJ Rush were announced as headliners at the end of 2010 . For the first time, the event was also extended to three days, making it the second largest music festival in Baden-Württemberg (after the Southside Festival ) .However, it must be mentioned that in the same year the number of visitors to Rock am See fell from 23,000 to 13,000 but stabilized again the following year at 25,000.
In the course of the Sea of Love 2011 event, however, there were massive problems: The Friday evening event in the Rothaus Arena at Messe Freiburg was completely filled with 6,500 visitors. Another 2,000 visitors in front of the exhibition grounds were refused entry. According to the police, who later cleared the area in front of the fair, the organizer did not comply with security requirements. The campsites were already overcrowded on Friday. In addition, the parking lots of various retail companies were blocked by parked festival guests and the construction site for the Pope's visit was damaged.
On Saturday evening there was confusion among the festival guests regarding the ticket regulations for entry to the fair, as an additional ticket was required for this. While the festival area was populated by 25,000 visitors, only 13,000 were allowed to enter the hall. The way from the festival area to the shuttle buses led through a tunnel, which led many visitors to memories of the accident at the Love Parade 2010 and to the fact that they walked to the fair and about 40 visitors crossed the A5 . The city administration announced shortly after the event that it would no longer exist with this organizer, who in their opinion was overwhelmed.
Sea of Love (Second Organizer)
At the end of 2011 it became known that the previous organizer had sold the rights to the concert organizer "KOKO & DTK Entertainment" and was threatened with a fine that was later set at 100,000 euros. Koko announced that he only wanted to concentrate on Lake Tunisee. 20,000 visitors were expected at this festival on July 14 and 15, 2012, and 15,000 visitors actually came on both days to see artists such as Deichkind or Gorillaz Sound System. In December 2012, the company announced that KOKO & DTK Entertainment would not host any further festivals as part of the Sea of Love series .
As a direct consequence of the events at Sea of Love 2011, the Freiburg municipal council decided at the end of January 2013 on a concept for the organization of future events on the part of the city administration as well as the establishment of an event management department in the first quarter of 2013. This position was confirmed at the municipal council meeting on April 16, 2013 approved for public order office.
Sea You
In July 2014, the Sea of Love Festival was continued under the new name Sea You in a smaller setting limited to around 10,000 visitors. The organizer was the Ludwigshafen event agency Cosmopop . The second edition of the festival took place on July 18 and 19, 2015, attracting over 15,000 visitors. Sea You Freiburg GmbH, founded especially for the festival, has been the organizer since 2015. When the festival was held in 2018, the number of 30,000 visitors was exceeded for the first time.
