Sean Burke (born January 29, 1967 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and currently serves as Director of Prospect Development for the Phoenix Coyotes from the National Hockey League .

Career

Sean Burke began his career in 1984 in the Canadian Junior League OHL with the Toronto Marlboros . In the 1985 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round in 24th place. After another season in Toronto, he played for almost three years for the Canadian national team, with whom he finished fourth at the 1987 Ice Hockey World Championship and the 1988 Winter Olympics.

In the same year he completed his first games in the NHL for New Jersey and at the beginning of the 1988/89 season he prevailed as a regular goalkeeper. In the 1990/91 season he was ousted by Chris Terreri as number 1 and the following season Burke played again mainly with the Canadian national team, which won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics in February 1992 .

In the summer of 1992 he was transferred from the New Jersey Devils to the Hartford Whalers . In Hartford he became the undisputed number 1 and was voted the most valuable player of the Whalers from 1994 to 1997. Nevertheless, he could never reach the playoffs with them . In the summer of 1997, the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina and renamed themselves Carolina Hurricanes . Burke completed the first few months with the Hurricanes, then was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in January 1998 . But only two months later he was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers in a transfer business . His contract expired at the end of the season and he had to look for a new team.

In September 1998 he signed a two-year contract with the Florida Panthers . But he did not stay in Florida for the full term of the contract. After 14 months he was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes in November 1999 . It was there that perhaps the best time of his career began. He was the goalkeeper of the Coyotes for three years and always had a positive win record. In 2002 he was nominated for the Lester B. Pearson Award for Best Player and for the Vezina Trophy for Best Goalkeeper in the NHL.

But that ended his heyday and he was ousted as number 1 by Brian Boucher and moved to the Philadelphia Flyers in February 2004, where Robert Esche, one of his former back-up galies, was in goal.

In the summer of 2005 he signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning , where he was number 2 behind John Grahame in 2005/06 . Grahame was given up after the season to the Carolina Hurricanes and committed two younger goalkeepers, Marc Denis and Johan Holmqvist , who ousted Burke from the NHL squad.

The 2006/07 season he first completed at the Springfield Falcons , the AHL - farm team the Lightning before the him Los Angeles Kings on January 18, 2007 by the waiver chose list since before their two first-choice goalkeeper Mathieu Garon and Dan Cloutier injured had.

After the season he received no new contract and ended his career in September 2007. A few months later, he returned to the Phoenix Coyotes organization, where he was responsible for training the next generation in the role of Director of Prospect Development.
