Sebastian Moll (* 1980 in Cologne ) is a German Protestant theologian and author .

Life

academic career

Moll graduated from high school at Apostelgymnasium in Cologne-Lindenthal in 2000 . As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he studied Protestant theology from 2001 to 2005 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the University of Lausanne in Switzerland (among others with Eric Junod ) and the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. After receiving his Master of Theology (with distinction) in 2005 , he obtained his doctorate from 2006 to 2008 with a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council on The arch-heretic Marcion at the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh ( Ph.D. 2009). His work was supervised by Sara Parvis and later featured prominently in international journals.

From October 2009 to 2014 he was a research assistant at the Department of Church and Dogma History (Prof. Ulrich Volp ) of the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Moll researched a. a. to early Christianity and the Old Testament and taught church history . He also wrote scientific articles in German and English-language periodicals. In 2014 he completed his theological habilitation thesis on Albert Schweitzer . This was rejected by the University of Mainz in 2015, as 3 reviewers came to the unanimous decision that the text did not meet the requirements for a habilitation thesis. This decision was reversed in April 2017 due to a court settlement so that he can resubmit his writing to a university.

Other activities

Since 2010 he has been the author of several non-fiction books , some of them in a “ polemical - satirical style”, which have been received by the Christian media and the daily press. The Christian conquest of the Old Testament (2010) was one of the non-fiction books of August 2010. Articles for the “Zeit” supplement Christ and World were also discussed.

Moll was a Methodist . He resigned from the Methodist Church before a lay preacher license could be granted. In the 2014/15 school year he worked as a lecturer in ethics and then as a study director at the “theological seminar” of the THS Academy for pastoral leaders in Bingen am Rhein .

Moll, by his own admission, took part in the march for the life of the rights movement in Berlin.

Journalism and reception

Interview with Christ & Welt

Moll accused Protestant theology of political correctness in the course of a dispute about his book Jesus Was Not a Vegetarian (2011) in the Zeit supplement Christ & Welt . In doing so, the church is neglecting the messages of the gospel . Probst Johann Hinrich Claussen , senior pastor at St. Nikolai in Hamburg, contradicted his theses and accused him of premature aging and discouragement. The theologian Petra Bahr , cultural representative of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany , addressed Moll with: “Avoid the [..] trick that is part of the manual of successful provocateurs. Do not stylize yourself as a martyr. "

Reception of his writings

The Christian Conquest of the Old Testament

Ramona Ambs brought in 2010 in the weekly Jewish General following criticism Molls at Berlin University Press published monograph The Christian conquest of the Old Testament (2010) provides: 'Moll's attempts to reject the Old Testament by Christians to represent as friendly to Jews as the complete collection are unconvincing. [...] Nevertheless, the book is definitely recommended. It actually offers a good brief overview of the early Christian thinkers and a good insight into today's understanding of a young theologian who, in the tradition of the Protestant bourgeoisie, struggles for his relationship with the Jews. "Claudia Sticher said in the Catholic weekly magazine Christ in of the present : “The passage through the positions in the early church is easy to read in a compact space and very informative, certainly the strongest part of the book. The sometimes somewhat too flippant handling of the theological tradition makes reading easier. Moll's undisguised sympathy for Harnacks' position as well as his own rather undifferentiated rejection of the Old Testament leave astonishment. "

Jesus wasn't a vegetarian

In a review of the book Jesus was not a vegetarian (2011) by Johannes Müller in the Catholic Sunday newspaper for Germany , it was said: Moll “is one of the conservatives, also from an evangelical-theological point of view. Paired with Rhenish quick wittedness, eloquence, sharp mind and downright mischievous charm, the result is a highly dangerous mixture. Especially for rhetoricians with dismay and do-gooders . ”The journalist Alan Posener wrote in Die Welt :“ Even with Moll, I get the uneasy feeling that the author has only used the Bible to prove what suits him. "

You shouldn't breathe

Concerning his work Du shall not breathe (2013), the economist Walter Krämer said in the political magazine NovoArgumente : “On each of the 120 pages of his slim book, Sebastian Moll holds the media-dominant prophets of doom in this country a thundering ceterum censeo that is worth reading. [...] May the world end, the main thing is that we feel good about ourselves. A brilliant general settlement with late romantics, ecoterrorists and all kinds of disaffected people. "

Public change of party

In the summer of 2014 he stepped out of the FDP and joined the AfD . In the Wirtschaftswoche he stated in a guest post that he “could no longer tolerate the behavior of the FDP”. He was particularly responsible for the euro rescue , the nuclear phase-out and gender research . With statements like "The FDP is dead, long live the alternative!" And "Common sense is not necessarily right", he turned to the new party.

After just three months, he settled accounts in the debate magazine The European with the AfD under the title Von Professoren und Proleten . As the world reported, he previously pushed for the establishment of a Christian working group within the AfD regional association of Rhineland-Palatinate. However, he was disappointed and was exposed to a shit storm. Thereupon he placed in The European , according to the world journalist Günther Lachmann , “the AfD in the tradition of the German national movement and the NSDAP ”. Since 2016 he has been a member of the Free Democrats again. He ran for the Rhineland-Palatinate municipal elections in 2019.

Moll sees himself as economically liberal and socio-politically more conservative .

Jürgen Moll Foundation

In 2013 he founded the Jürgen Moll Foundation (JMS) in honor of his deceased father . Initially, it awarded the Jürgen Moll Prize for scientific publications (dissertations, habilitation theses or scientific monographs) . It is endowed with 5000 euros (as of 2019). Moll is also a juror for the German Reading Prize , an initiative of the Reading Foundation and the Commerzbank Foundation, whose “Science Prize” is sponsored by his foundation. Moll gave the laudatory speech at the 2013 award ceremony for the economist and journalist Walter Krämer, Professor of Economic and Social Statistics at the Technical University of Dortmund . The foundation was dissolved in 2017. Since then, the Jürgen Moll Prize has been presented by the DEUTSCHE SPRACHWELT and the Theo Münch Foundation for the German language.
