In 1835 there were still a windmill, an almshouse and another building, surrounded by sand and heather, on the area of today's Sedanplatz, the highest point of the developing Vegesack. These houses are also included on plans from 1880.

The square, laid out in 1895, was named after the French town of Sedan , where the Battle of Sedan ended victorious for Germany in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 . A so-called Bismarck oak from the Sachsenwald was planted for this purpose.

In the 1950s, one to two-story houses surrounded the square, where only cars were parked, except during the weeks of the Vegesack market . In addition, the Scheffel fast food restaurant existed here for decades. In a plan from 1964, the western edge of the square is bounded by the building of the tax office , the eastern side by eight houses and the southern side by ten houses. Since the end of the 1960s, there has been a more compact and higher development around the square; The Gustav-Heinemann-Bürgerhaus from 1977 is significant here. In 1973 the core of Vegesack was declared a redevelopment area. The square still appears very large, although the Vegesack market hall on the west side has been reducing the square area since 2007.

The Vegesacker Markt , which has been celebrated every year at the beginning of September since 1808 , has also been held on Sedanplatz since around 1950, a folk festival with many rides as well as lottery and shooting booths.
