Sedgefield was an administrative district with borough status in County Durham in England . It was named after the town of the same name, Sedgefield . However, the largest city was Newton Aycliffe , while the administration was in Spennymoor . Other important places in the former district were Shildon and Ferryhill .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was the result of the merger of the urban districts Spennymoore and Shildon, the rural district Sedgefield and part of the rural district Darlington. On April 1, 2009, in addition to Sedgefield, all Dictricts in County Durham were abolished as part of the administrative reform and merged into the Unitary Authority County Durham .
