history

Seebach in 1947: aerial photo by Werner Friedli

The name Seebach was first mentioned in a document in 1212. However, there are finds from the 6th century BC. BC, so that the former village should undoubtedly be older. The Katzenbach, which was previously called Seebach, separated the southern upper village on the slope of the groyne hill from the second part of the village, the Ausserdorf. In the 15th century the village had about 55 inhabitants, at the end of the 18th century 500.

In 1877 the Swiss National Railway (SNB) built a railway line through the Furttal with a station in Seebach. However, the railway company went bankrupt shortly afterwards, as the route did not lead to the major centers and therefore could not acquire any great importance for passenger traffic. The Zurich – Oerlikon – Seebach tram , which was built in 1897, was more successful .

Until around 1930 Seebach had its own zoo .

In 1935 the Catholic Church of Maria Lourdes was built.

Incorporation

The municipality within the Zurich district before the merger in 1933

In 1934 Seebach was incorporated into Zurich , together with Oerlikon , Affoltern , Schwamendingen , Witikon , Höngg , Altstetten and Albisrieden .

Local division

Staudenbühl in the south of Seebach

Seebach borders on the Oerlikon and Affoltern districts to the south, on the Schwamendingen district to the east , and on the communities of Opfikon and Rümlang to the north .

The Schaffhauser-, Glattal-, Seebacher- and Thurgauerstrasse are the actual main traffic axes. The Seebacherplatz forms the center of the district.

Seebach station is served by the S6 line of the Zurich S-Bahn . The railway line runs from Oerlikon station in a 50-degree curve to Seebach and from there on in the direction of Affoltern– Regensdorf .

The industrial and commercial zone is mainly to the east of Schaffhauserstrasse, while the residential areas and green spaces of Seebach can be found to the west. RUAG Space (formerly Oerlikon-Contraves ) and EDS are located on Schaffhauserstrasse , the Airgate Center , Sunrise Tower , Oerlikerhus along Thurgauerstrasse and the Swiss television studio on Leutschenbach . The Leutschenbach district east of the railway embankment has been experiencing an upswing since 1990 thanks to new commercial and residential properties.

Churches and cemetery

Reformed church on the groyne

The Evangelical Reformed Church has two churches in Seebach:

  • the Nikolauskirche (built in 1664), which can be found on the corner of Seebacherstrasse / Buhnrain and on the foundations of two previous buildings, probably from the 12th and 14th / 15th centuries. Century stands,
  • and the Markuskirche (built in 1948, architect Albert Heinrich Steiner ), which is slightly elevated on the groyne and is clearly visible with the 35 meter high, free-standing bell tower.

The Roman Catholic Church is represented in Seebach with the parish Maria Lourdes:

  • The Maria Lourdes Church is located on Seebacherstrasse and was built between 1933 and 1935 by the architect Fritz Metzger . The chapel attached to the Maria Lourdes church with a replica of the Lourdes grotto is the Marian pilgrimage site of the city of Zurich.

The Zurich-Seebach congregation of the New Apostolic Church owns a church that was built between 1965 and 1966 and is located on Hertensteinstrasse.

In 1903, the In der Heu cemetery was built to replace the overburdened churchyard at the Nikolauskirche , which today still exists as one of the 26 cemeteries in Zurich under the name Schwandenholz cemetery . As a special feature, the cemetery has reserve areas for a disaster in the city.

Public transport

Seebach is connected to Oerlikon and further to Zurich city center by tram line 14. Since December 10, 2006, tram line 11 , which has been extended from the Hallenstadion , has been running through Thurgauerstrasse to Auzelg in District 12, the route being used as part of the first stage of the Glatttalbahn infrastructure project .

The 768 bus connects Seebach directly to the Oerlikon train station on the one hand, and to the northern communities of Opfikon and Kloten and to Zurich Airport on the other . The 742 bus connects Seebach with the northern neighboring municipality of Rümlang . The bus routes 40 and 75 form the backbone of the fine development within Seebach. On Friday and Saturday nights, the N6 and N7 night buses run from Bellevue to Seebach and then serve the suburbs of Zurich.

Since 1990, trains of the S-Bahn Zurich have been running directly to the main station on the former national railway line. Today the S6 runs every 30 minutes from Uetikon and Zurich HB via Seebach and Regensdorf on through the Furttal to Baden .
