The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), German for "Sefako Makgatho Medical University", is a South African university founded in 2014 and opened in 2015 with its headquarters in Ga-Rankuwa northwest of the urban core of Pretoria in the Gauteng province .

history

Emergence

Blade Nzimande , the Minister of Higher Education and Training (about: "Minister for Higher Education and Training") initiated the establishment of this university as a member of the government. A working group set up by him in May 2011 under the leadership of Malegapuru Makgoba (former Vice-Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal ) and Max Price (Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town ) examined the possibilities of using the existing MEDUNSA campus of the University of Limpopo To be organizationally separated in the future and to be integrated into a new higher education institution.

The formal establishment of the medical college took place on the basis of a ministerial notice published in the South African Government Gazette No. 37658 on May 16, 2014. The concrete preparations for the establishment of this facility were accompanied by experts from Johns Hopkins University . In addition, an international advisory supervisory body was created with representatives from South Africa, Uganda , Thailand , the United States and Brazil . The university's first academic year began in 2015 with 5,144 registered students.

Naming

The university was named after Sefako Mapogo Makgatho , an educator, Methodist theologian and early civil rights activist , whose father, Kgorutlhe Josiah Makgatho, was the head of an influential family and a chief in the area of the former Transvaal .

prehistory

The regional focus of medical education, which exists due to its previous history, is based on the establishment of a tertiary educational institution on the edge of the 350-hectare Ga-Rankuwa Township, initiated in 1976, for the purpose of training blacks to become doctors, dentists, as well as in the health and care professions. That year, the apartheid government at that time submitted a draft law to parliament, which provided for the establishment of a new training facility for doctors from the Bantu population . The existing training capacities at the University of Natal Medical School for primarily non-European people had proven to be overburdened (here students at the end of 1975: 46 colored , 350 Indians , 199 Africans ). With the Medical University of Southern Africa Act ( Act No. 78/1976 ) it was intended to set up a related and alternative offer in the fields of medicine, dental and veterinary medicine for the Bantu population of the " national units ". The proposed university council should include representatives from all homelands , all three Bantu universities ( Fort Hare , North , Zululand ) and representatives from the medical and dental departments of the University of Pretoria and Witwatersrand University . In 1977 flowed from funds of Bantu Administration 14 million edge in the development of this institution. The first 80 students were admitted to study in January 1978. At the end of 1978 there were already 110 black students registered. The first scheduled graduates were forecast for 1982. In view of the small number of graduates to be expected here and the resulting statistical disproportion to the size of the Bantu population group, Phillip Valentine Tobias , the then dean of the medical faculty at the Witwatersrand University, criticized the concept of MEDUNSA and called for a "radical adjustment program" of their curriculum to the general training requirements for medical professionals.

organization

The central training facility for medical practice is the university hospital. It bears the name Dr George Mukhari Hospital (formerly Ga-Rankuwa Hospital ) and is one of the leading facilities of its kind on the African continent. It is the second largest hospital in South Africa.
