Seixal ( IPA : [ sɘiʃæɫ ]) is a Portuguese district ( concelho ) and a city ( cidade ) with 158,269 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds prove the presence of the Romans . Today's city was created by fishermen who settled here. In 1403 the first tide mill was built here with the Moinho da Maré in Corroios , and shipyards were built here in the booming shipbuilding of the Portuguese voyages of discovery in the 15th century. The local ship type of the Varino still reminds of this tradition today. The current place name probably developed from the large occurrence of pebbles (port .: Seixo), which were needed as ballast for the cargo ships.
The Lisbon earthquake in 1755 caused widespread destruction. The current circle was created in 1836 . The establishment of numerous industrial companies was important for further growth, in particular the construction of the Fábrica de Pólvora de Vale de Milhaços from 1895–1898 (closed in 2001) as well as the construction of the Mundet cork factory in 1905 (closed in 1988) and the construction of the Siderurgia Nacional steelworks in 1961 ( Shut down in 2001). The opening of the Ponte 25 de Abril (then Ponte Salazar) in 1966 also provided impetus for development. In 1993 the district experienced a final expansion, when Fernão Ferro was incorporated .
Culture and sights
About 10% of the district area belongs to nature reserves, which are summarized here as Reserva Ecológica Nacional . These include a. various wetlands ( Sapal de Corroios , Sapal de Talaminho ) and the Bay of Seixal, where flamingos and other bird species can be observed. The Ecomuseu is present there with a visitor center and various smaller thematic exhibition locations and local museums in the district.
In addition to various sacred buildings are u. a. the boat museum, which is v. a. dedicated to the local type of ship of the Varino , and to visit the excavations of the Roman pottery kiln at Quinta do Rouxinol .
The port facilities Estação Náutica da Baía do Seixal with marina, excursion boats, gastronomy u. a. will be further expanded. The cycle path network of the city and the district is also being expanded.
The decaying remains of the former luxury hotel complex Hotel do Muxito are a curiosity . a. more than 13 guest houses, an artificial lake, tennis courts, a small bullring, a miradouro with wide views, and swimming facilities of Olympic standards. The facility was abandoned before the Carnation Revolution in 1974. At the latest after the hotel was occupied by radical left forces in the post-revolutionary furor and partly destroyed inside, all plans for new concepts have been dropped. Today it is an unreal-looking place that is also used by geocaching search players.
With the Festa do Avante! Every year in late summer one of the largest cultural events in the country takes place in the district, u. a. with concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, food shows, readings and record markets. Over half a million visitors usually come here over the weekend.
Sports
The international badminton championship Plume d'Or 1979 took place here.
The Seixal Futebol Clube , founded in 1925, is an important sports club with its football, futsal , basketball and roller hockey departments. His lower-class professional football team was disbanded in 2007. The Estadio do Bravo stadium was then sold to Benfica Lisbon , where 5,000 people can watch the games of the Benfica amateur teams after a renovation.
Other clubs in the district include u. a. Amora Futebol Clube , the Atlético Clube de Arrentela sports club founded in 1925 (athletics, swimming, billiards, table tennis, basketball, cycling, football), and the Paio Pires Futebol Clube, also founded in 1925 .
