Sentenced was a Finnish metal band formed in Oulu in 1989 . In the beginning she played melodic death metal , later melancholic doom metal , eventually she developed her own style, which can best be described as melancholic, gothic- influenced heavy metal .

history

The band was founded in 1989 by guitarists Sami Lopakka and Miika Tenkula and drummer Vesa Ranta. In 1990 the bassist and singer Taneli Jarva joined the band. The band initially released a few demos until their first full album, Shadows of the Past , was released in 1991 . At that time, the band's style was pure death metal , which the band maintained on the following albums North from Here and the mini-CD The Trooper (both released in 1993). The title track The Trooper is a cover version of the Iron Maiden song.

In 1995 the band made their breakthrough with the album Amok . The music became slower and more melodic; Jarva's singing had also developed noticeably. The band's next release, the mini-CD Love and Death , also followed this style. To the surprise of the fans, Jarva left the band after the completion of this album.

He was replaced by Ville Laihiala, who sang much clearer. The first album with the new line-up was Down , released in 1996 . Once again the band's style became more melodic. The next album Frozen also followed this development, here the new bassist Sami Kukkohovi can be heard for the first time.

In recent years Sentenced have lost some of the old death metal fans due to the style change, but were able to gain a new fan base. Their most recent releases, Crimson and The Cold White Light, seem more mature to some, but less melodic and peppy to others, compared to previous works by the band.

In early 2005, the band announced that The Funeral Album would be the band's final LP. On October 1, 2005, they gave the farewell concert in their hometown of Oulu, during which material for the CD / DVD Buried Alive , released on November 24, 2006, was recorded. The band gave personal reasons for the breakup: The "Rock'n'Roll-Way-of-Living" (much away from home on tour) had always been stressful and at the expense of family and children. One no longer wants to make this sacrifice.

After the band broke up, Ville Laihiala carried out alcohol withdrawal before reporting back with the band Poisonblack , which had previously been run as a side project . Sami Lopakka founded a merchandising company that makes clothing lines for metal fans. At the beginning of 2008 he became musically active again and released his first album with KYPCK . Sami Kukkohovi is also on stage at concerts of this band. Vesa Ranta, who had always designed the artwork for the Sentenced releases, now works as a photographer and also opened a bar in Oulu. In 2009 he founded the band The Man-Eating Tree . Miika Tenkula died on February 19, 2009, according to his family, of a congenital heart defect.

style

The lyrics often deal with topics such as depression , suicide and death in all possible variations, as in some cases already on the song titles (such as Excuse Me While I Kill Myself , Cross My Heart and Hope to Die , Drown Together , Consider Us Dead , The Suicider etc.) is recognizable. At the same time, a certain black humor plays an essential role, as the band ironically parodies the mentality of the Finnish people in their lyrics. Finland has above-average suicide rates. Because of the sometimes very depressive and gloomy mood of their music, the band is also assigned to Dark Rock or Gothic Metal . The band itself describes their music as "Melancholic Rock".
