Septemwri ( Bulgarian Септември , to German September) is a city in the south of Bulgaria near Pazardzhik . Septemwri is the center of a community named after her . The city is located in the western part of the Upper Thracian Plain , about 20 km west of Pazardzhik.
The former village of Saranyovo was renamed Septemwri after the communists came to power in 1944 in memory of the September uprising. The village has been a city since 1964.
On January 16, 1988, 16 human rights activists, mostly former political prisoners, founded the Independent Society for the Protection of Human Rights in Septemwri , which was directed against communist domination. It was the first opposition organization in communist Bulgaria.
Septemwri is on the Sofia – Plovdiv railway line and is the starting point of the narrow-gauge Rhodope Railway .
