Serbin's position in Texas

Serbin is a community in Lee County , Texas . It has 90 inhabitants (2000).

Founded in the 1850s by Sorbian emigrants, it is located about 80 km east of Austin . Around 550 Wendish Lutherans from Saxony and Brandenburg settled here in the 19th century under the leadership of Pastor Jan Kilian . They were the first members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Texas.

Although Sorbian is no longer spoken in Serbin, the residents keep the memories of their ancestors alive and maintain contacts with their ancestors' homeland. The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum is housed in the former school building of Serbin .
