Sergei Nikolayevich Arzibaschew

Sergei Nikolajewitsch Arzibaschew ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Арцибашев ; born September 14, 1951 in the village of Kalja, Sverdlovsk Oblast ; † July 12, 2015 in Moscow ) was a Russian theater director and actor . During his artistic career, he directed over 40 plays and played roles in more than 20 films.

Life

Sergei Arzibaschew graduated from the Urals Polytechnic and from 1976 studied at the Drama Faculty of the Sverdlovsk Theater School. He continued this training until 1981 in Moscow at the Russian Academy for Theater Arts with Maria Knebel and took his first steps in the field of directing . Two study projects were created: the staging of the novella Women and Children by Alexander Volodin and the play Love based on a story by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya . This was followed by the productions of the short story Two Poodles by Semyon Slotnikov and the graduate drama Small Orchestra of Hope , which was performed in 1981 at the Taganka Theater . Arzibaschew took on all male roles himself.

After completing his training, he began his career as an actor and director at the Taganka Theater on the initiative of Yuri Lyubimov . After taking acting and directing courses at the Academy of Theater Arts, he staged the play Music Lessons by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, which was added to the repertoire of the Mayakovsky Theater in 1989 . His collaboration with the theater began in 1987 when he, the piece Zhanna from Alexander Galin brought to the performance.

At the age of 37, Arzibaschew became the main director and from 1989 headed the Moscow Comedy Theater. In 1991 it was reorganized as the Russian Pokrovka State Theater and he simultaneously took on the positions of artistic director and main director. He played many leading roles in his plays, including Hamlet and Lenin . In addition, he staged plays in other Moscow theaters. He worked with the Neue Oper (1998 Eugen Onegin ) or with the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army (1981 The Arrows of Robin Hood by Walter Scott ). From 2002 to 2011 he directed the Mayakovsky Theater. His successor was Mindaugas Karbauskis from Lithuania .

Since the 1980s, Arzibaschew also worked as a cinema director. As an actor, he mainly took on secondary roles in comedies. In 2007 he played the role of one of the twelve jurors in the film 12 by Nikita Mikhalkov . He had his last appearance in 2014 in the film The Fool , a social drama by Yuri Bykov .
