Sergio Barroso

Sergio Fernández Barroso (born March 4, 1946 in Havana ) is a Cuban - Canadian composer and music teacher .

Barrose attended the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana from 1950 to 1966 , where Alfredo Levi , César Pérez Sentenat , Edgardo Martín and Alfredo Díaz Nieto were among his teachers. He then studied composition with Václav Dobiáš , Alois Hába and Karel Janeček at the Prague Music Academy until 1968 , conducting with Manuel Duchesne and Gonzalo Romeu at the Universidad de La Habana and computer music with John Chowning and Jean-Claude Risset at Stanford University .

He then taught at the Conservatory, Music School and University of Havana. In addition, he was head of the music department of the National Library and the Ministry of Culture of Cuba and responsible for contemporary music at the Instituto Cubano de Radio y Televisión . From 1976 to 1980 he was general secretary of the Cuban section of the International Music Council of UNESCO .

In 1980 he moved to Canada, where he first taught at Trent University , from 1981 to 1984 at the University of Victoria and then at Simon Fraser University .

Barroso has been composing primarily electroacoustic music since 1969 , but he also wrote works for orchestra, chamber ensemble and choir as well as film music. His works have been performed internationally, including a. at the International Rostrum of Composers (1980 and 1995) and at the International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music (1990 and 1994) of UNESCO. He received a prize at the Bourges Electroacoustic Competition in 1980 , the New York Cintra / Arts International Composition Award in 1999 and the Victor M. Lynch-Staunton Award from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2000 .
