The ETR 300 , better known as Settebello , was an Italian luxury - trainset .

vehicles

In 1952, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) acquired two, and in 1959 another multiple unit of the ETR 300 series for fast passenger transport for the top customer segment at Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie . The units were given the company numbers ETR 301–303. One unit consisted of seven car bodies in three groups. One end car and the adjacent middle car ran on a shared Jakobs bogie , the three middle cars were connected by two Jakobs bogies. The six bogies at the ends of the three groups were motor bogies with two traction motors each. The drive power of a unit was thus 3120 hp . The trains reached a top speed of 180 km / h.

The interior of the Settebello was very exclusive and luxurious. It was designed by Gio Ponti and Giulio Minoletti . The seven-part multiple units had a generous seating configuration and, after the class reform of 1956, only ran the first class of car . Of the seven cars , only four were seated cars. The others served as dining and bar carts , one for the kitchen and one for transporting luggage. The train was equipped with train mail radio so that the travelers could telephone in the Italian network. A special feature was the training of the end car as a pulpit car with a viewing compartment. The driver's cabs were located behind in roof structures.

commitment

From 1953, the multiple units initially ran on the Italian main line between Milan and Rome , and at times also to Naples . Initially, only one set was used, which left Rome in the morning and returned from Milan late in the evening. When more units became available, two pairs of trains ran daily. The trains were named MN / NM depending on the direction of travel. Ultimately, the train route was limited to the Milan – Rome route and the train name was changed accordingly to MR / RM and from 1973 again to 802/803. The trains only stopped in Bologna and Florence on the way .

From May 26, 1974, the trains operated as the third Trans-Europ-Express connection between Milan and Rome with train numbers 68/69. By 1978 it was possible to shorten the journey times - also through the opening of sections of the high-speed route Florence – Rome - to 5 hours 20 minutes for the now 602 km long route. That corresponded to a cruising speed of 112.9 km / h.

In 1984 the multiple units, some of which were over 30 years old, had to be withdrawn from the connection. Since 1984 it has been called Colosseum , was given train numbers 76/77 and was served by locomotive-hauled trains from new Gran Confort cars. The Settebello trains were used as the Rapido between Milan and Venice until 1992 .

In 2020 the last preserved multiple unit, ETR 302, was brought to the Officina Metalmeccanica Specializzata in Porrena , where it is to be repaired within two years and equipped with the necessary train control and communication systems. It should be upgraded for a speed of 160 km / h. The cost is estimated at 13 million euros , of which 4 million euros will be taken over by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities and 9 million euros by the Fondazione FS Italiane . The train will then be operated by the Fondazione FS and be available for special trips .

Surname

The name Settebello ( "Beautiful Seven") is the name of the Joker in the card game Scopa and also alludes to the seven luxury cars, from which each of the multiple units was formed. While the name had long established itself in public, it was only officially used by the FS for the ETR 300 and the connections operated by them since 1958.

Trivia

In April 1961, the Quattroruote auto magazine organized a race between an ETR 300 and an Alfa Romeo Giulietta between Milan and Rome. The train took 6 hours 37 minutes. The Alfa Romeo was 38 minutes faster.

A vehicle from the ETR 252 series - a shortened version of the ETR 300 - was refurbished ready to drive in 2019.
