Severius Jamil Hawa

Mor Severius Jamil Hawa ( Aramaic ܡܪܝ ܣܘܪܝܘܣ ܔܡܝܠ ܚܐܘܐ; born as Jamil Hawa on April 14, 1931 ) is an Iraqi Syrian Orthodox clergyman and Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baghdad & Basra , which contains five independent parishes. At 87 years of age, he is the oldest serving Syrian Orthodox bishop.

After Hawa made his monastic profession , he was ordained a priest on March 5, 1955. 15 years later, on October 18, 1970, the then Patriarch Ignatius Jacob III consecrated him . to the Bishop of Baghdad and Basra, Iraq . At this consecration he took the name Severius according to the Syrian Orthodox tradition, which states that a newly ordained bishop is given an additional saint's name .

After the death of Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas in March 2014, the Synod elected him "locum tenens" according to § 29 of the Constitution of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, which means that he will carry out the duties of the deceased Patriarch during the period of vacancy of the Holy See took over. He was also the one who announced the results of the patriarchal election (see: Conclave ).
