action

In order to recruit the aging English safe-cracker Gal for one last big coup, the middleman responsible for such matters, Don Logan, travels to Spain. Gal has finished his previous gangster life and lives happily in retirement there. In order not to get involved in crooked business and conflicts from the past, Gal Logan cancels. Logan, who lives in Gal's villa for the time of his stay, is not satisfied with Gal's rejection and begins to terrorize Gal and his wife Deedee with increasing aggressiveness in order to persuade Gal to participate.

Logan's violent unpredictability escalates, leading Deedee to shoot Logan when he beats Gal. Fearing the revenge of the gang that carried out the break-in, Gal travels to London. There he claims not to know anything about Logan's whereabouts and takes part in the coup. The aim of the break-in is a vault in London secured by a meter-thick steel door. Gal and his gangster friends from earlier times drill their way into the vault from the pool of a neighboring swimming pool, flood it with water and successfully clear it out. But the head of the gang, the dreaded Teddy Bass, suspects Gal's secret.

Gal succeeds in returning to Spain unscathed. While he's back in the sun in his villa by the pool, the viewer learns that Logan is buried under the pool, which had to be repaired as part of the subplot.

IMDb

Anthony Lane stated in the New Yorker on June 18, 2001 that the name "Don Logan" alone sounds as frightening as the name " Keyser Söze ". He went on to say that Ben Kingsley is seen "petrified" like a "cobra in human form" or, in other words, he behaves like the "anti- Gandhi " par excellence.

Michael Haberlander at Artechock spoke of the fact that the film was “freshly and creatively staged” and also had to offer “psychological depth”.

Der Spiegel certified on June 24, 2002: "In this ambitious, sometimes very sparse, then again rather desolate genre variation from England, Kingsley delivers his master villain piece."

The lexicon of the international film said: “The script only superficially relies on the psychological motives of the protagonists, whose rude language leaves the limit to good taste far behind. The camera work and soundtrack are remarkable, the characters well cast. Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone play against their image not without success, but even they can do little against the banality of evil. "

Up to June 5, 2008, Rotten Tomatoes counted 115 evaluated reviews with a share of positive ratings of 86 percent (100 percent of 7 top critics). In the IMDb on January 23, 2015, the film received 38,217 audience ratings and 7.3 out of 10 points.
