Shannon Regina Johnson (born August 18, 1974 in Hartsville , South Carolina , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. She last played for the Seattle Storm in the Women's National Basketball Association in 2009 .

Career

College and ABL (1992 to 1998)

Johnson studied at the University of South Carolina from 1992 to 1996 . While in college, Johnson also played for the university's women's basketball team, the South Carolina Gamecocks .

After her at college Johnson moved to the American Basketball League (ABL) , where she was selected by the Columbus Quest in the ABL Draft 1996 in the eighth round in the 61st place. Johnson played two seasons for the Quest, with which it won the championship in 1997 and 1998. After that, the ABL was dissolved again after only two seasons; so she had to end her career in the ABL early.

WNBA (1999 to 2009)

Since the ABL was dissolved, Johnson moved like many ABL players to the Women's National Basketball Association. In the 1999 Post-Expansion Draft Player Allocation , it was assigned to the Orlando Miracle expansion franchise . Johnson was an important part of the Miracle from the very first season, for which she played a total of four seasons. Johnson was not only one of the best players in the Miracle during this time, but also in the entire league, which is why she was also elected to the Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 1999, 2000 and 2002. In the 2002 season she played her best season so far when she averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 assists per game. However, there was no great team success with the Miracle. Only in the 2000 season she reached the playoffs with Orlando, with which she did not get beyond the first round. 2002 Miracle were at Mohegan Sun sold, the left to move the franchise to Connecticut, and the name of the team in Sun changed. In her first and only season for the Sun, she was elected to the All-Star Team for the last time and achieved a double-digit average for the last time with an average of 12.4 points per game. With the Sun she reached the playoffs for the second time where she was eliminated in the Conference Finals against the eventual champions, the Detroit Shock . After this season she was transferred to the San Antonio Silver Stars for their 4th, 16th and 29th draft pick in the 2004 draft, together with the 21st and 34th draft pick in the 2004 WNBA draft . Johnson played three seasons for the Silver Stars with which she never reached the playoffs. Johnson averaged over 9 points per game for all three seasons. On March 6, she signed a contract with the reigning champions of the Detroit Shock . Due to the high quality of the Shock squad, she didn't get as much playing time as in previous seasons, which also had a negative effect on her points average, etc. Nevertheless, she reached the WNBA Finals for the first time this season . However, she lost with the Shock against the Phoenix Mercury in the fifth and decisive game of the series. On March 7, 2008, she again signed a one-year contract, this time with the Houston Comets . In Houston she got more playing time again, but with missing the playoffs the team success failed again. After the Comets ceased playing after that season, she signed with Seattle Storm . Since the Storm in the 2009 season , like the Shock in 2007, have an extremely strong squad, their playing time is again significantly lower than in the previous season. After that season, she did not sign a new contract with a WNBA team.

Europe

For several years she was also active for clubs in Europe.

National team (2002 to 2004)

Johnson won the gold medal with the US national basketball team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and was basketball world champion with the US team in 2002.
