Shaun Cameron Wright-Phillips (born October 25, 1981 in Greenwich , London ) is an English football player with Jamaican and Grenadian roots. Growing up in Brockley - in the south of London - he attended "Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College" and currently plays in the United Soccer League for Phoenix Rising .

Club career

Manchester City

Shaun Wright-Phillips first played for Nottingham Forest in his youth before joining Manchester City 's youth department at the age of 15 . There he signed his first professional contract on July 20, 1999, came in the third division on October 30, 1999 to his debut against Port Vale in the first team and developed at the latest in the first division season 2000/01 to a permanent fixture in the team. He made a name for himself as one of the most talented young English players, above all through his determined style of play, technical skills and speed. After relegation and a season in the second division, he returned with City in the Premier League for the 2002/03 season and was primarily in the position in the right attacking midfield and as a right winger regular player.

Wright-Phillips moved to reigning champions FC Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on July 17, 2005 for £ 21million, returning to his hometown of London.

Chelsea FC

Wright-Phillips signed a five-year contract with Chelsea. Initially, however, he could not play in the regular formation, had to struggle with weaknesses in the end goal and was primarily a supplementary player with 24 substitutions in 39 games. He scored his first goal for the new club on December 5, 2006 in the Champions League against Levski Sofia - almost 17 months after his move. The first moderate season at Chelsea was partly responsible for the fact that he was not called up in the English squad for the 2006 World Cup , and there were already increasing rumors of a possible loan Wright-Phillips to his old club in Manchester.

However, Wright-Phillips countered these assumptions and confirmed that he wanted to fight for his place in the team and was reinforced in this plan by coach José Mourinho , who in turn denied transfer speculations about Joaquín from Valencia CF by pointing out that he was on the wing positions already had enough options. In the 2006/07 season , his performance improved steadily, and Wright-Phillips came on April 18, 2007 in the game against West Ham United to his first two championship goals. In the following years he was in the starting line-up more often, including the FA Cup final, which Chelsea won 1-0 (Wright-Phillips had already been substituted at the time of the decisive goal).

Also in the 2007/08 season he consolidated his place on the right wing, showed himself in good early form and prepared a large number of goals.

For the 2008/09 season he returned to Manchester City.

Queens Park Rangers

On August 31, 2011, he moved to the Premier League newly promoted Queens Park Rangers and signed a three-year contract.

Change to the USA

In July 2015 Wright-Phillips moved to the United States and the closed MLS - Franchise New York Red Bulls at, at this time his younger brother in which Bradley was active. In the 2015 and 2016 seasons Wright-Phillips came to a total of 21 appearances (19 regular season and two play-off appearances), in which he scored two goals. There was also a deployment in the second team in the United Soccer League (USL), which is considered to be second class .

For the 2017 season, Wright-Phillips switched to the USL franchise Phoenix Rising .

International career

Wright-Phillips made his debut for the English national football team on August 18, 2004 against Ukraine , scoring a goal as a substitute in the second half. He then received sporadic appointments to the English selection during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, but after a persistent form crisis and the low number of appearances in Chelsea, he was denied the nomination for the World Cup.

In the two qualifying games for the Euro 2008 against Macedonia and Croatia , he was used on the right wing position. After the good start to the 2007/08 season at the club, he was called back to play a friendly against Germany and finally came on as a substitute in the second half of the game. Although England lost the game 1: 2, Wright-Phillips was able to convince with a good performance and was named best player ("Man of the Match"). This earned him a place in the starting XI for the game against Israel on September 8, 2007, in which he scored his second international goal and was voted best player again after the 3-0 win.
