Shawn Peter Raul Mendes (born August 8, 1998 in Toronto ) is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter , who was best known through the video portal Vine .

Life

Shawn Mendes grew up in Pickering , a suburb of Toronto. He is of Portuguese and English descent. He attracted attention on the Internet , especially on Twitter , YouTube and Vine, where he published a cover version of Hometown Glory by Adele in 2012 . At the age of 15 he was signed to Island Records . Largely without radio and television support, it garnered a large following on the Internet and reached 3.8 million fans on Vine. His first release in the summer of 2014, the song Life of the Party , became the most shared song of the week on Twitter, and also made it to the Canadian and US charts. He reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making him the youngest performer to achieve such a high ranking with his debut single. The song was also successful in other countries such as New Zealand and Sweden .

Mendes also achieved high views on YouTube and passed the 10 million mark with the video for the song as well as the videos for Show You and Something Big that were published afterwards . Further publications followed, some of which also made it into the charts. As a guest singer on the Simon and Garfunkel cover version Oh Cecilia of the Vamps , he had a top 10 hit in the UK charts . In February and March 2015 he toured Europe and North America. He also accompanied Taylor Swift on her North American tour .

His debut album Handwritten was released in mid-April 2015 . In Great Britain it reached number 12, in Sweden and Portugal it was in the top 5. In Canada and the USA , Mendes was the second Canadian after Justin Bieber to reach number 1 in the charts with his debut album at the age of 16. In January 2016 he received the People's Choice Award as Favorite Breakout Artist . In November 2016 he was awarded the MTV EMA as best male artist. From April to December 2017 he was on the Illuminate World Tour . In May 2018 the album Shawn Mendes was released , which reached number one in the charts in many countries. The American Time Magazine named Mendes one of the 100 most influential people in 2018.

In June 2019 he published the duet Señorita with Camila Cabello . Worldwide, the song was the third most successful song in 2019 with 16.1 million digital units sold. The two have been a couple since summer 2019.
