She - ruler of a sunken world (Original title: She ) is an American feature film from 1935 . The film based on the novel She - A History of Adventure (title of the German edition: Sie ) by Henry Rider Haggard was produced by Merian C. Cooper at Prudential Studios in California . In Germany it was shown under the name She - Ruler of a Sunken World and in Austria under the name Das Land des Horens . The premiere took place on July 12, 1935 in the USA. On December 8, 1989, the film ran for the first time on German television on ARD .

Leo Vincey visits his dying Uncle John, a scientist, in England. On his deathbed, he told him about a family secret that had been kept for 500 years. In a letter that has been passed on in the family for generations, an ancestor tells of a "flame of life" that confers immortality . Leo promises his uncle to find it, and John dies.

Leo is now heading north with John's assistant Horace Holly to the polar region , where the flame of life is said to be located, according to the letter. They are joined by the merchant Dugmore and his daughter Tanya with some porters and expedition helpers . When the tour group finds a clue to their destination in the polar region, an avalanche is suddenly triggered, which buries and kills all expedition participants except for Leo, Horace and Tanya. At the same time, however, the avalanche also exposes the entrance to a cave. Through this the three enter the kingdom of Cor. You will be received by the ancient Queen She, who has become immortal through the bath in the flame of life. She thinks she recognizes Leo as his ancestor, from whom the letter came that Leo had received from his uncle. She was in a relationship with this ancestor, and is now looking for the love of Leo. However, he is already in love with Tanya. She tries to kill Tanya with a devious plan. However, Leo realizes this in time and can save Tanya. The three travelers flee and enter a large cave in which they find the flame of life. She is already there and tries to convince Leo to also achieve immortality through the flame of life and to rule with her. To convince him of the harmlessness, she steps into the flame. In this way, the effect of the first bath is canceled in the flame, and She is aging in time-lapse tempo like and dies. Leo, Horace, and Tanya leave the cave without a bath in the flame.

Contrary to the novel, the plot was moved from North Africa to the northern polar region. Furthermore, characters have been added to the film that do not appear in the novel, such as the role of Tanya Dugmore. Originally the film was supposed to be shot in color, but due to budget cuts it was eventually shot in black and white. A colored version is now available on DVD .

The film was a financial flop, losing $ 180,000. The film is counted among the " 100 Most Entertaining Bad Movies of All Time " by John Wilson, the founder of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation , which also awards the Golden Raspberry .
