Sherborne is a small town in the county of Dorset in the south west of England . It has about 9,645 inhabitants (2014). Sherborne has a famous history, historic buildings and a variety of schools. The best known of these is the " Sherborne School ".

geography

Sherborne is on the Yeo River , about six kilometers east of Yeovil . The district of the city is almost completely enclosed by that of the rural community of Castleton , only in the extreme southwest is a short shared border with Thornford .

history

The city takes its name from scir burne ( Old English ), for example "clear source river".

Origins go back to the 7th century ; Sherborne was an important city and religious center of Wessex , one of the seven Saxon kingdoms in England. King Alfred's older brothers Æthelbald of Wessex and Æthelberht of Wessex are buried in the abbey. Aldhelm was the first bishop of Sherborne . In 1075 the church buildings became a Benedictine abbey . During local conflicts in later centuries, the city partially burned down but was rebuilt. In the 12th century , Roger of Caen , Bishop of Salisbury and Chancellor of England , built a fortified palace that was destroyed in the English Civil War in 1645. Ruins in a later large garden remained.

Sherborne Castle

In 1594 Sir Walter Raleigh built a mansion nearby. This is known today as Sherborne Castle . During the Second World War it served as an important command center.

A school had existed since the time of King Alfred, who was trained there. In 1550 it was re-established as today's Sherborne School in the abbey buildings.

For centuries, Sherborne was a regional administrative center ( Sherborne hundred ).

Sherborne is a founding member of the European association of cities, Douzelage .
