Waylon Albright "Shooter" Jennings (born May 19, 1979 ) is an American country singer and actor. He is the only child of country singers Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter .

Life

Childhood and youth

Jennings spent the first years of his life in his parents' tour bus. He started playing drums at the age of five, learned to play the guitar at the age of 14 and also tried his hand at the piano , the Hammond organ and later the banjo . He sometimes performed with his father and has already recorded several private demo tapes with him. Up until his youth, Jennings was influenced by country because of his parents and their environment, at 16 he also discovered rock music for himself. In 1997 he graduated from the University School of Nashville .

Career

Beginnings

As a young man, Jennings left Nashville and moved to Los Angeles . There he began to play in a southern rock band called Stargunn , with whom he could initially only achieve local successes in six years. In March 2003 he left Stargunn and moved to New York . A successful performance in the House of Blues revived his creativity and Jennings returned to Los Angeles and formed the band The .357's with Ted Russell ( bass ), Leroy Powell (guitar) and Bryan Keeling (drums) .

2004 to 2008: With the .357's

Jennings and the .357's recorded their first album Put the "O" Back in Country in 2004 under the production of Dave Cobb , which was released in early 2005 on Universal South and reached number 22 on the Billboard Country Charts . The single 4th of July with George Jones as a guest singer was the only one of Jennings' singles to reach the Hot Country Songs at number 26.

Jennings also appeared as an actor in the following years, for example in the TV music film CMT Outlaws from 2004, and in The Dukes Of Hazzard County ( A Duke rarely comes alone ). The Johnny Cash - biopic Walk the Line Jennings portrayed his father Waylon and headed for the same soundtrack titled I'm a Long Way From Home at.

Shooter Jennings in 2006

After Electric Rodeo and the live album Live at Irving Plaza were released in 2006 , Jennings released his album The Wolf in October 2007 . It reached number 12 on the charts. On this album he deviated from his hard sound and approached a softer alternative country.

On September 26, 2008 he released the second The Nightwatchman album The Fabled City with Tom Morello . Jennings had written the lyrics for the song The Iron Wheel , which he sang in a duet with Morello. In October 2008, a project followed Jennings' that he had started in 1995 with his father Waylon. Back then, his father had sung new interpretations of his own pieces, as well as works by Neil Diamond and Rodney Crowell . After Waylon Jennings' death in 2002, the project was initially put on hold. In 2008 shooter Jennings finally played the background music for his father's singing with his band .357's.

Jennings brought the country gospel quartet Oak Ridge Boys to his producer David Cobb in 2009 , who with the band produced their album The Boys are Back , for which Jennings wrote the title track of the same name. The Oak Ridge Boys had already played on Jennings' album The Wolf ( Slow Train ).

2009 to 2010: Black Ribbons

In 2007 guitarist Leroy Powell left the band and in 2009 Jennings founded his new background band Hierophant , which in addition to Jennings, Keeling and Kamp also has Bobby Emmett ( keyboard ) and John Schreffler (guitar) as members. With this new group Jennings made a change of direction in terms of his musical style from alternative country to psychedelic rock . The new album, Black Ribbons , which was released in March 2010, is more political and more profound in content than Jennings' previous albums and - according to Jennings - should be a concept album about " truth and waking up ": " We want to promote something that will awaken some people ... "Jennings also announced in an interview with Alex Jones that he had dealt with Freemasonry and the occult , which made him a different person (" Brought me to be a completely different person "). The download single Wake Up! Was released from the album Black Ribbons in December 2009 . released and as part of the Warped Tour 2009 Jennings and Hierophant introduced some new songs.

Black Ribbons reached number 16 in the independent charts, number 34 in the rock charts and number 133 in the Billboard 200 album charts, which, along with Waylon Forever, was his worst chart position on the Billboard 200 to date. Allmusic gave the album a 2.5-star rating (out of a total of five) while other reviewers praised the album.

2011 to 2014: The Triple Crown

At the end of March 2011 Jennings finished the recordings for his album Family Man in New York City . The background band was not Hierophant, but a completely new group consisting of Chris Masterson (guitar), John Graboff ( steel guitar ), Erik Deutsch ( piano ), Mickey Raphael ( harmonica ), Eleanor Whitmore ( fiddle / guitar / mandolin ), Jeff Hill (bass) and Tony Leone (drums), who calls themselves The Triple Crown . Jennings turned back to country on this album. In August 2011, the single Outlaw You was released for download on iTunes , but it is not on the finished album. The Deed and the Dollar followed in December 2011, this time a release from the album Family Man , which was released on March 13, 2012. It debuted at number 10 on the country charts but dropped back to number 26 after a week.

After Jennings' critically acclaimed album Black Ribbons , with which he “wanted to create something of his own”, Jennings said he had returned to his roots. He didn't know beforehand that Family Man would be a purely country album. It is his first album, for which he wrote and produced all the tracks himself, with which he separated from his longtime producer Dave Cobb. Jennings is also planning a biopic about his father Waylon. A producer and a screenwriter have already been found, he told Rolling Stone .

Jennings stuck to his country style for his fifth studio album. Recorded again with The Triple Crown , The Other Life was released on March 12, 2013 and reached number 19 on Billboard's country charts in its first week. The White Trash Song (with Scott H. Biram) and Wild and Lonesome (with Patty Griffin) were released as single from the album in advance . A short film written by Jennings, Blake Judd and RD Hall, which takes up the contents of the album, was also released with the album. From the beginning of March 2013 Jennings and his band were on the Gunslinger tour through the USA to market the new album. The tour ended in July of that year with an appearance on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance .

Unlike Jenning's previous album, The Other Life was less successful in terms of the charts. With position 19 in the country albums it was listed nine places and with position 130 in the Billboard 200 even 77 places lower. Critics, however, were impressed with the album. Mando Lines thought some songs were among Jennings' best works (" It has some of Shooter's best work to date ") and Thom Jurek called the CD "all killer, no filler". Jochen König was also enthusiastic in German-speaking countries and gave The Other Life 13 out of 15 possible points in a final rating.

In late October 2013, Jennings announced the formation of his own label, Black Country Rock, based in Los Angeles and Nashville. The first publications appeared on the market at the end of November 2013. Among them were Jennings' second live album, The Other Life , recorded during the 2013 Gunslinger tour, his mother Jessi Colter's first live album, Live from Cain's Ballroom, and a re-release of Right for the Time from 1996 his father Waylon.

Also on Black Country Rock, Jennings' EP Don't Wait Up (for George) was released on August 5, 2014 as a tribute to longtime friend George Jones , whom he had known since childhood. " When people ask me about who I remember hanging around as a kid, I always say that I remember Tony Joe White and George Jones being the most frequent and consistent around the house, " Jennings said in connection with the publication.

2014 to 2016: tribute to Giorgio Moroder

A second EP Countach (for Giorgio) was planned for November 2014 to honor the composer and synthesizer producer Giorgio Moroder . However, due to the sudden death of Jennings' manager and friend Jon Hensley, this move was postponed. Hensley was also a co-owner of Black Country Rock.

The EP eventually became an album, which was released in February 2016 under the title Countach (for Giorgio) . A tribute to the Italian producer and synthesizer pioneer Giorgio Moroder , Jennings' works had a significant influence on Jennings as a child. On the album Jennings experimented with synthesizer elements in the style of Moroder and mixed them with his country roots. The The Daily Times said Jennings in an interview in August 2017 that he at Countach was very proud, even if it consists entirely of cover versions.

2017 until today

In the same interview, Jennings also said that after Countach it was time for him to return to his country roots. He announced a new album that, according to Jennings, would be the "most solid, classic country record" he could make. For this production he got back together with his former producer Dave Cobb. In early 2018 it was announced that Jennings' new album would simply be titled Shooter and would be released in August.
