Origin of name

Mural of the Sibyl in the foyer

There are numerous legends and sagas surrounding Tillenberg ( Dyleň ) near Neualbenreuth on the Czech-Bavarian border , in which the medieval seer Sibylla Weis also plays a role. The “doomsday prophet” was born around 1570 with the baptismal name Michalda. In 1616 her visions, which extend into the third millennium, appeared under the title The Prophecies of Sibylle Michalda . The nickname was chosen based on the ancient Roman fortune tellers . Also known as the “Sibylle of Prague”, she gave her name to the Sibylle Bath. When she died in 1658, around 90 years of age, she had reached an unusually old age for the time. It is therefore a suitable symbol for a medicinal and thermal bath.

Development overview

Ruins of the project that failed in 1972 (status in January 2013)
  • In 1965, private investors began planning a thermal bath near Neualbenreuth . In 1971 the foundation stone was laid for this first unsuccessful attempt to found a spa. Along the farm road to the right of the outdoor facilities of the sauna area, the ruins of the former construction site that have not been dismantled extend. The now heavily overgrown facilities are several hundred meters long, about 100 meters wide and comprise several floors. The large-scale project planned as a depreciation company with several hundred construction workers failed after an investment of around 16 million German marks.

  • In 1978, the Upper Palatinate District Assembly bought the area with the three developed sources for 450,000 German marks.
  • In 1980, a Sibyllenbad association was founded, in which the neighboring towns of Waldsassen , Mitterteich , Tirschenreuth and Neualbenreuth were involved in addition to the Upper Palatinate administrative region and the Tirschenreuth district .
  • From 1989 onwards, the Sibyllenbad spa and medicinal baths were built in several phases as a district of Neualbenreuth . The first bathhouse was opened in Maiersreuth.
