Sidney Gilliat
Sidney Gilliat (born February 15, 1908 in Edgeley , † May 31, 1994 in Pewsey Valle , Wiltshire) was a British screenwriter , film director and film producer .
Life
Sidney Gilliat first worked as a journalist and then came to film as an assistant screenwriter and as a gagman. As a co-author, he wrote his first screenplay in 1932 and then worked for several years mainly in productions by Michael Balcon . During this time, a long-term collaboration developed with his colleague Frank Launder , which over the years also included directing and production responsibility in addition to writing scripts. In addition to a number of average entertainment films , they also wrote the book A Lady Is Disappearing, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and several films by Carol Reed . From the early 1960s, Gilliat was the director of Shepperton Studios active, founded the British Screenwriters Association and was rarely active as a writer or director.
